GPS Survey

GPS (Global Positioning System) is a pinpointing system by satellite which has been operational since 1993. GPS is used in viticulture to form a map of the vineyard with millimetre precision.

What can be surveyed with GPS?

A GPS survey represents homogenous crop units (plantation zones, generally defined by a geographical area, a grape variety, a year of plantation, or any other characteristic that defines a production area) as well as characteristic points on the land (ditches, electricity poles, drains, etc).

This GPS survey is carried out by land surveyors.

Interest of GPS surveys

GPS surveys provide the exact morphology of each plantation zone (down to the last detail: steps, curvatures, etc.) and therefore allow you to determine the actual planted surface areas.

However splintered the vineyard may be, all the zones surveyed by GPS are positioned very precisely in space, in relation to a given reference standard (the Lambert standard in France), in order to respect the (real) land distances between these zones. This is the same standard as that used on the official French maps and land registers.

This highly precise system known as georeferencing also allows you to superimpose on the LAVILOG map as many other maps as you wish (land register plans, building plans, mains maps, pedological map, aerial photos, official maps, etc).

Furthermore, it is possible to integrate new plots of vines planted later, by proceeding to a new survey of these plots only. They will automatically overlay the existing ones, guaranteeing the lasting use of the GPS survey.

After the GPS survey: integration of data into LAVILOG

Vectorial files in dxf format, directly usable by LAVILOG, are supplied when the GPS survey has been done.

As an option: a large-format printout (type A0: 120cmx84cm) is also proposed. This plan includes all the elements surveyed as well as other items (land registry plots, paths, buildings, other characteristic items, etc). This plan is an excellent communication material; it generally presents the Château logo (scanned label, for example).
